The City of Connell is a vibrant, rural community that is conveniently located between Spokane and the Tricities. The community offers the best of small-town America with a population of 5,125. Connell has recently processed some development applications and expects to see hundreds of new homes being built in the next few years.
The position of Police Chief is a sworn, department head level position that reports directly to the City Administrator. It is a full-time exempt position, which requires attending meetings and events outside of regular business hours, including some weekends and evenings. The Chief of Police is a working Chief position and helps patrol and take calls as needed. The candidate must be familiar with the operational and policy issues associated with a small law enforcement agency. The position of Police Chief is highly visible in the community and the new Chief will be expected to collaborate regularly with City staff, elected officials, committee members, partnering agenices, and the community at large. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of outstanding character and integrity, and will approach day-to-day operations with an optimistic, can-do attitude.
The Police Department has 6 Police Officers and 1 Records Clerk/Property and Evidence Custodian, in addition to the Police Chief. The annual budget for the Police Department is $1,027,500. The Chief of Police is responsible for all police operations, as well as being the City's Emergency Management Director.
REQUIREMENTS: This position requires 7 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience as a commissioned officer, including 5 years in senior law enforcement managment and supervision. Local government law enforcement experience is highly desirable. Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field. Advanced law enforcement training (e.g., FBI National Academy, Executive Command College, or other advanced/executive training) is desirable. Any combination of relevant education and experience, which clearly demonstrates the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.

SALARY: $76,731- $91,624 annually. Placement within the range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
The following requirements must be met by applicants:
- All requirements of RCW 43.101.095, Washington State Peace Officer Certification, and obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
- Possess a Washington State Driver's license.
- Must meet eligibility requirements to hold the position of Police Chief (RCW 35.21.333).
All candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and pre-employment medical test. Residency within the City of Connell is preferred but not required and can be discussed upon being selected.
